Vierailevien designereiden sarjassa on vuorossa Montrealissa, Kanadassa asuva Guisela, joka suunnittelee ekologisia koruja merkilleen under a new light. Haastattelu vain englanniksi, sorry!

In the guest designer series this time we'll hear about Guisela from Montreal, Canada. She designs ecofriendly jewelry for her label under a new light.

1. Tell me something about yourself
I’m from Lima, Peru, where I lived close to the beach. Now, I live in Montreal, Canada. Far from the beach, but close to the man that I love (and whom I met in China) and my little babygirl Mia- Valentina. When I moved to Montreal, I wasn’t sure if I liked it. Gradually, I discover a really interesting and cosmopolitan city, with four very different seasons, a great artistic and fashion culture and, of course the French language. I now create ecofriendly jewelry & accessories with a mix of Native-American, Latin, and vintage influences. I like to brand my items as FUN, RECYCLED & UNPREDICTABLE.

2. How did you start to make eco friendly jewelry and accessories?
Well after giving birth to my daughter, I spent some time thinking about what I wanted to do. One of the ideas that came coming back was discovering the artistic side of me. I had never really tried to develop that talent. And since I have a degree in environment, my objective was to create things out of recycled or reused material. I didn’t want to add more waste to our world. There’s so much beautiful things that we can create with what we have around us. This is how I brought together my environmental background with my love for creating and fashion.

3. What does sustainable design mean to you?
Personally, sustainable designs means creating fashion items that don’t have a negative impact on the environment. It means creating a piece of art by reusing or recycling material. Sometimes, it can even mean using material that would otherwise have gone to waste. Finally, I prefer to use natural material as much as possible. For me, sustainable design means creating beautiful items while keeping in mind my impact on the environment.

4. What are your favourite materials?
I like textiles, leather, vintage chains, raw stones, antique finds

5. Do you find it difficult to get eco-materials?
Yes I do. And sometimes, it’s can be quite complicated. Here’s the challenge: not everything can be reused or recycled. You have to keep in mind that women will wear your jewelry on a daily basis. You want to pick material that is of good quality, clean, and esthetically interesting. Gradually, I’m discovering some places that sell that kind of material. Sometimes, I’m hunting the thrift stores trying to find vintage, ethnic textiles and leathers. I’m also trying to connect with the eco-community in Montreal to find other places that offer great supplies.

6. What is your normal day like?
9:00 carry my baby to the daycare.
9:30 review my convos
10:00 do some laundry/cleaning
11:00 draw some designs in my little book
1:00-3:00 begin with some crafts / make some treasuries for advertisement
3:30 go pick up my little Valentina at the daycare
5:00 make dinner with my husband
7:00 dinner time with a great glass of wine! :)
9:00 relax

But this schedule will change very soon since I’ll be a part-time student. I will have to reorganize my life a little.

7. Where do you get your inspiration?
I really love photography. I’m not a photographer, but I get lots of inspiration from the color combination, the landscapes, the objects, the spaces. Sometimes, it’s a photo with a native American touch that helps me develop a new design. Sometimes, it’s geometry. I think that this is the science part of me :D

8. What kind of plans do you have for the future?
Have balanced life, I think this is very important. I really want to continue improving my techniques and designs. I do have some of my items in one boutique and would like to have them in more :P.

9. …anything you’d like to say…

Yes, I’m quite new in this industry. I think that we must be persistent to reach our goals and connect with people who have the same interests than us and who will appreciate our work. Good energy is always welcome!

Uuden vuoden kunniaksi Vietto-blogissa tullaan näkemään sarja vierailevia suunnittelijoita ympäri maailmaa. Ensimmäisenä vieraana on Kyproksella ja Australiassa vaikuttava taiteellinen indiemuotimerkki mishimoudesigns. Haastattelu vain englanniksi, sorry!

As a fresh start for a new year starts a guest designer series here in Vietto-blog. First guest will be indie label mishimoudesigns from Cyprus/Australia.

1. Tell us something about yourself

I am a self confessed fashion devotee, both personally and professionally.
Any spare time I have, I devote to my craft and to any professional goals I
may have in fashion for the future.

2. How did you start your career as a designer?

My training has been an ongoing school textbook one. I was admitted to my
Bachelor of Arts(Fashion) degree in Australia and immediately started
working upon graduation. I have had the advantage of being guided and
mentored along the way by some hugely supporting peers and friends/family. I
have over ten years of professional working experience amongst a variety of
companies/positions.
My most memorable memories are from working as an Eveningwear/Accessory
Designer for a local Private Luxury Couture Label in Melbourne, Australia.
This position enabled me to have my designs selected to appear in fashion
spreads and paid adverising in "Studio" and "Studio for Brides"(magazines)
and generated great revenue and exposure for the label. My time within this
company enabled me to excercise my creative freedom, alongside a guiding
managing director as a mentor. This individual has now become a personal
friend of mine.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

This can come at any time and can be triggered from the most unconventional subject matters, thus the evolution of my label name "mishimou(designs)", which means something along the lines of..."as if" in foreign slang dialect.
Mostly and predominately, my inspiration starts with the fabrics' characteristics and the dictation of the "gravity of the cloth". I tend to prefer shapes and designs of an uncomplicated nature that have a practicality behind their conceptual point-of-difference. In other words, form should follow function.

4. Do you have any place you find particularly inspirational?

I am mostly drawn and inspired by textures, patterns, lines and bold shapes. A richly intricate pattern of sorts, rustic decay, a clean and confident brushstroke and a sharp, modern silhouettes. I also find the history of certain cultures extremely inspirational: in particular, Ancient Rome/Greece, Paris, Latin America, Polynesia, Africa, Central and Southeast Asia....most of which have a strong culture where the dress mode has a strong onus on the element of drapery as form.

5. What are your favourite materials?

I find I am subconsciously drawn to either sculptural fabrics or fabrics with a liquid-like drape to them. I love fabrics that are manufactured in Japan/Korea for their innovative and technological appeal. Fabrics from these countries generally have a genuine, lasting quality that gets better with wear.
I also tend to prefer monochromatic neutral colours/designs with a practical veratility about them. Ultimately, there needs to be some sort of point of difference either in the form of texture or handle, as I feel hanger appeal is paramount to initial consumer interest.

6. Do you have any plan or a vision where are you going to be with your label in the future?

There a few thought going in my head at the moment. One of which is the
interest in creating a wardrobe capsule collection of fundamental basic
pieces as a core project. Eventually, I aim to focus on specialising in one
area or product and develop this area to the highest of standards and to the
best of my ability. I am currently testing the waters with a range of
products on [etsy.com] to gauge what it is that I do best before
unnecessarily investing further. I am not interested in wasteful and
seasonal range releases, if I can help this at all. I am also quite
conservative in my investments towards an avant garde clothing collective. I
like to find a happy medium between commercial design and alternative
design. One which will find its purpose within peoples wardrobes and
clothing pieces which will strike a chord with dissatisfied and discerning
consumers.

7. What are your favourite labels and who are your favourite designers?

There are a large number of designers that I follow the work of, and all for
different reasons.
Some of the more well known labels are Maison Martin Margiela, Ann
Demeulemeester, Hussein Chalayan, Comme des Garcons/Rei Kawakubo/Junya
Watanabe and Yeohlee. All these designers are admired by me for having their
own recognisable signature in an industry which is at times saturated with a
"sameness" sort of flavour.
Others which I'm sure you'll hear more of in the future include
Kayiko(Independant label in Vienna), Mariavittoria Sargentini(Independant
label in Italy), Zambesi (New Zealand based label), and
Artlab/Patricia Ayres(Independant label in New York)....and the list goes
on.....
I think I tend to favour designers who have conceptual fashion ideas which
are versatile and functional in todays busy world. Pieces which travel,
layer and mix easily and effortlessly always get my attention. I am
concerned about quality also and find there are huge opportunities to fill
this void in the fickle fashion industry, where I believe, disposable
fashion has taken its toll in peoples wardrobes and in our environmental
society.
There are so many choices for consumers today that what we really need are
ones that seperate from the crowd for their own purpose to the industry and
perspective.....I am sure that those who are conscious of their imprint on
the environmental concerns facing the world and modify their business
practices accordingly are the ones which will reap the benefits and last
within the fashion industry.

8. …anything you’d like to say… ;)

The most important lesson I have learned in the field of fashion is to be kind.
I also believe one needs to be extremely conscious in all respects about what they create and make and how they go about it.
I strongly believe, that with the surge of "disposable fashion", there will be a gradual return to craftsmanship/quality and product specialisation in the fashion arena. This is what I am focusing on and striving for daily with my work and the direction of my label, "mishimou"[designs].

Vietto korut leikkivät eri aikakausien historiallisilla tyyleillä, kuitenkin modernilla otteella. Tumman romanttiset sävyt, kiehtovat steampunk korut, kauniisti yhdistellyt vintagehelmet... Koruissa on käytetty mm. vanhoja korun osia, kellonkoneistoja, kierrätysnahkaa ja -pitsiä. Korvakorujen koukut ovat aina uusia ja käyttämättömiä, samaten kaulakorujen ketjut ja lukot. Riippuviin korvakoruihin tulee mukaan silikoniset tulpat, jotta korvikset varmasti pysyvät korvissa.

Vietto on Minna Kaartisen vuonna 2007 perustama ekomuotimerkki. Vietto-mallisto tarjoaa naisten vaatteita, asusteita ja koruja, joiden valmistuksessa on käytetty pääosin kierrätysmateriaaleja, luomupuuvillaa ja ylijäämämateriaaleja. Alun perin ajatuksena on ollut luoda ekologisista materiaaleista raikasta, innovatiivista muotia, jossa ekologisuus on tärkeä tausta-arvo, mutta ulkoisesti tärkeintä on design. Kaikki Vietto tuotteet valmistetaan 100% eettisesti Suomessa.
